Modern Farmhouse Style
We are getting close to the square footage goal. There is still room to make some savings and flow improvements, but I’m leaving it to work on at the next stage.
In the next stage, we will explore the house’s elevations design options. Our house character will arise, and I prefer having some freedom there.
Please review, and let me know your thoughts in the comments. With your approval, I will start working on the look of our house.

|Richard and I would like to build this home as a place for us to retire and be the home family comes to for holidays and celebrations. We would like rooms or suites of rooms that would be good for extended stays when we have guests in town and hopefully someday grandkids! We want to be able to seamlessly entertain outside and inside. Extended family gatherings would be approx 30 people.Downstairs, we want a suite of rooms for the master with a “Jack & Jill” set up. Richard’s company operates in Europe and Asia so he is frequently having to take calls at odd times. While he can fall right back asleep, once I’m up, I’m up, so we would like for him to have a separate bedroom/sitting area for those nights. On the other side of the house we want a “mother-in-law” type suite of rooms with a living area, bathroom and bedroom.
Kitchen – I love to cook. I would like a large refrigerator, dishwasher (maybe two), wall ovens, and a large sink with a window. I want a large island with seating and a smaller “technology bar” that has seating that faces the living room. We had this in our house in Portland and used it a lot. I have included a pic of it. I would also like a sunroom off of the kitchen. We currently have two cats and want to keep their litterboxes out there with a pet door. If at some point we don’t have pets, we want the space to be useable as a sunroom/sitting area for the kitchen.
Upstairs – Richard works from home and is on calls most of the day so we want his office to be upstairs with a view of the lake. In addition to his office, we would like a large area for entertaining with glass doors that can be opened onto a large patio. We want two guest rooms and a small kitchen/bar inside as well.
Garage – We want an extended 3-car garage that would fit a large SUV. We would like heated/cooled storage between the house and garage. In addition, we want a saferoom/tornado shelter. We’re not sure if we want an above-ground saferoom or an underground structure that could be used as a wine cellar. That probably depends on the soil and if something underground is feasible.
Style- We like the transitional style with clean lines and bright, open areas. We lean towards the modern look but definitely want it to also feel comfortable and not too sterile. We lived for a time in the PNW and really liked the look of the houses there.
Richard and I have been married for 29 years and have built three homes, but never a truly custom home. We have two daughters ages 22 & 21. Kaitlyn is a reporter with Channel 6 in Tulsa and Jenna is a senior at OU studying to be a physical therapist. Jenna might live in this house with us while she attends PT school.
I drew up a plan on an iPad that basically shows what rooms we want and where. I drew the rooms the sizes I thought made sense (on graph paper its 1ft for each square). There is a lot of wasted space and the house, as drawn, is essentially a big rectangle with no idea how to put the upstairs on it! This is just a starting point. We look forward to working with you!

|Plenty of counter & storage space, lots of light, conducive to cooking meals for several people, large island with seating and a sink for making drinks or setting out food, lots of deep drawer storage, separate dining room with table for 12. Kitchen open to living area. Large walk-in pantry with wine storage. We lived in Oregon for a while and are members of wine clubs there so we get shipments of wine that need to be stored correctly.|

|We like the tile floors that look like wood planks because they’re much more durable than real wood, which we had before. In the bedrooms & living room, we want Berber carpet. Heated master bathroom floors with Travertine stone (unless cost prohibitive).|
