David Art Center, New Orleans – Travel

First things first, I had to stop by an art supply store before anything. Even more when I realized that I was been scammed with the ink I was planning to bring. Before my flight, I made a research regarding the art supplies stores in town. So David Art Center seemed to be the best one. This store located halfway between the airport and the core touristic area of New Orleans. Since we got a night flight, we reserved our first night in a hotel close to the store. So we could be able to visit it before tourism started.

After some “first day shopping” at the Lakeside Mall, we walked straight to David Art Center a few blocks away. Getting into a store like that was more than impressive. It is huge, but not only it’s about the size, It is also about the variety an quantity of products. When you think you walked the store, then there is another corner to discover, it is just amazing.

We got there when they were about to close. Then they decided to stay open for us, what lovely people are Fernando and Adriana, the shop owners. Later, along with the conversation they caught me and my wife speaking in Spanish and they told us they are from Uruguay! wow! Even better!. What a warm people, so we started exchanging histories like old friends.

One of the best is that the store is called after their dog David. He is the actual owner of the place. So we went to his special room at the back of the store to meet him. There he was, a huge, friendly and energetic Weimaraner. It made me feel kind of nostalgic because I remembered Jagger a Weimaraner I had twenty years ago.

They helped me a lot. So I found everything I was looking for and some new tools I didn’t know they even exist. I hope people from Noodler´s pay them a visit soon since that was the only item they didn´t have. The sketchbooks you see on the pictures are a present from Adriana. The CD with New Orleans Essential Jazz Music is a present from Fernando. He is a collector and gave it to me when he knew I’m a music lover as well. Aren’t they lovable?

The Castagnet surprise…

When we were about to leave, I noticed they had the instructional CD from the great Alvaro Castagnet. When I mentioned it Fernando told me “of course, he is my cousin”. Then they walked me to another area that I have not seen before where they have paintings from Castagnet. I took pictures of that, but they didn’t honor the art, so I invite you to visit his website.

Well, Alvaro Castagnet likes it here so much that he comes once per year to use the studio for a weekend watercolor workshop. Guess who is invited for this year’s Castagnet workshop?

Visita a David Art Center

Primero lo primero, tenía que pasar por una tienda de artículos de arte antes que nada. Aún más cuando me di cuenta de que me habían estafado con la tinta que planeaba llevar conmigo. Antes de partir hice una investigación sobre tiendas de arte en la ciudad y David Art Center parecía ser la mejor. Esta tienda se encuentra a mitad de camino entre el aeropuerto y el área turística de Nueva Orleans. Ya que el nuestro era un vuelo nocturno, reservamos la primera noche en un hotel cerca de la tienda. Así podríamos visitarla antes de que comenzáramos a ser oficialmente turistas.

Después de algunas “compras de primer día” en Lakeside Mall, caminamos  a David Art Center, a pocas cuadras de distancia. Llegar a una tienda como esa fue más que impresionante. Mi mandíbula cayó al piso (necesité la ayuda de mi esposa para volver a colocarla en su lugar).

… una tienda gigante!

Llegamos allí cuando estaban a punto de cerrar. Aún así decidieron permanecer abiertos para nosotros, qué gente tan amable son Fernando y Adriana.  Durante la conversación, notaron que hablábamos  español y nos dijeron que eran de Uruguay. ¡Guauu! ¡Aun mejor!. Que gente tan cálida, empezamos a intercambiar historias como viejos amigos.

La tienda es enorme, pero no solo se trata del tamaño, sino de la variedad, la cantidad de artículos. Cuando crees que caminaste por toda la tienda, entonces hay otro rincón que descubrir, es simplemente increíble.

Una de las mejores historias es que la tienda recibe el nombre de su perro David, quien es el verdadero dueño del lugar. Fuimos a su habitación especial en la parte trasera de la tienda para conocerlo. Allí estaba, un enorme, amable y enérgico Weimaraner. Sentí un poco de nostalgia porque me hizo recordar a Jagger, un Weimaraner que tuve veinte años atrás.

Me ayudaron mucho, encontré todo lo que estaba buscando y algunas herramientas nuevas que ni siquiera sabía que existían. Espero que la gente de Noodler les haga una visita pronto ya que ese era el único artículo que no tenían. Por supuesto, con tanta amabilidad y conocimiento compré la lista completa y más. Los sketchbooks que ven en las fotos son un regalo de Adriana. El CD es un regalo de Fernando con lo esencial del Jazz de New Orleans. Fernando, que es coleccionista de música me lo dio porque supo que soy un amante de la música como él. ¿no son adorables?

La sorpresa de Castagnet…

Cuando estábamos a punto de irnos, noté que tenían el CD instructivo del gran Álvaro Castagnet. Al mencionarlo, Fernando me dijo “por supuesto, él es mi primo” ¡¡así de simple !! Luego me llevaron a otra zona que no había visto antes, donde tienen pinturas de Castagnet. Tomé fotos, pero la verdad no le hacen honor a su arte, les invito a que visiten su website.

Bueno, a Álvaro Castagnet le gusta tanto aquí, que viene una vez al año a usar el estudio en un taller de acuarela de fin de semana. ¿Adivinen quién está invitado para el taller de Castagnet de este año?
