Strathmore Sketchbook – Tool Review

I’m still searching for the perfect Sketchbook …

In a previous post I reviewed Stillman & Birn and it is an excellent option that stands out above any other I have tried before. Still, I did not want to make a decision without first evaluating something equivalent, at the same professional level, so I decided to evaluate Strathmore 400 series.

In the search I not only acquired different brands, but different types of notebooks, in the case of Strathmore I choose the watercolor version, softcover, in landscape format. My first impression on this book is like love at first sight, the appearance is of an elegance far superior to the others. The cover is chocolate color, but it is not only colored cardboard but has a thin coating that gives a look and feel to the touch rather like matte leather, I had never seen that finish before on a sketchbook cover.

Inside the paper is tan, 300 gsm, cold pressed with a fine texture, its quality is indisputable. It is the best quality paper I have found among Moleskine, Pentalic, Rubistein and others. I think that the quality of this paper is surpassed only by Arches papers level whose quality is indisputable, those are masterpiece oriented products, I could not consider using them as sketchbooks.

As always to test the product I applied on it the techniques and tools that I regularly use and also took it on a travel to do some Urban Sketching.

I like this Watercolor Sketchbook so much that now I’m going to order it in the Mixed Media version to compare it one on one with Stillman & Birn to make my final decision.

Sigo en la búsqueda del Sketchbook perfecto…

En un post anterior revisé Stillman & Birn y es una excelente opción que sobresale por sobre cualquier otra que haya probado antes. Aún así no quise tomar una decisión sin evaluar antes algo equivalente, del mismo nivel profesional, así que decidí evaluar Strathmore serie 400.

En la búsqueda no solo adquirí distintas marcas, sino distintos tipos de libretas, en el caso de Strathmore me hice de la versión de Acuarela, tapa blanda, en formato apaisado. Mi primera impresión sobre esta libreta es como de amor a primera vista, el aspecto es de una elegancia muy superior a las demás. La cubierta es de color chocolate, pero además no es solo de cartón de color sino que tiene un fino revestimiento que le da un aspecto y sensación al tacto bastante parecido al cuero mate, nunca había visto ese acabado.

Al interior el papel es de color beige claro, 300 gsm, prensado al frío y de una textura fina, su calidad es indiscutible. Es el papel de mejor calidad que he encontrado entre Moleskine, Pentalic, Rubistein, entre otros. Creo que la calidad de este papel es superado solo por libretas tipo Arches cuya calidad es indiscutible, son productos más orientados a artes finales u obras maestras, no puedo tomarla en cuenta para usarlas como sketchbook.

Como siempre para probar el producto apliqué sobre ella las técnicas y herramientas que normalmente uso y también la llevé de viaje para hacer algo de Urban Sketch.

Me gusta tanto esta libreta de Acuarela que ahora voy a ordenar la version Mixed Media para compararla una a una con Stillman & Birn y así tomar una decisión final
