Mateusz Urbanowicz is a Polish illustrator whose facination with Japanese anime led him to settle in the Japanese nation where he works in a film production company of the genre. Mateusz has his life parallel to the formal work that occupies him and that is the one he shares through his social media accounts, essentially on YouTube and Patreon, this book is the result of one of those projects. Arriving in Tokyo, he was attracted by the appearance of those small traditional shops that go unnoticed by the villager’s eye and are an extravagance for a foreigner who starts walking the small streets of the megalopolis.

I discovered Urbanowicz in the wonderful world of Pinterest, the images of his illustrations of facades of traditional stores in Tokyo were widely dispersed on the social network, he has web site, but it seems to me that his YouTube account has the most strength, he’s constantly assembling videos of his work and the detailed processes he follows to achieve it, he is a very nice person and you will really enjoy and learn with his videos.

The book itself is a wonderful piece, it shows all the care that has been put into the details, it is not hard cover, but that makes up for it with a beautiful cover with a folding cover printed on both sides, you’ll find the map from the city of Tokyo with the locations of all the stores illustrated in the book on the inside of that folded cover. The caliber and texture of the material of its pages are perfect and above all the print quality, unmatched, few books I have seen with this level of printing, the colors and the resolution are impressive. All this talking about the production of the book, if we go to talk about the artistic work itself is even more impressive, the production only honors the quality of Mateusz’s work. Each of the facades has a perfect balance, it is a maximum but synthetic level of detail that causes to see the illustrations again and again for a long time, scrutinize and enter them, it is like eating a dessert without end.

Unfortunately the book is only available in Japan, I had to buy it, make it go through the United States and then get it to Venezuela in South America, although it was a long trip, the wait was very short, in a week I had this wonderful piece in my hands!

In the process I communicated a couple of times with Urbanowicz who was kind enough to respond to my emails personally even though the purchase of the book is made through Amazon Japan.

Now I will try to acquire a signed copy of any of the illustrations in the book!

Mateusz Urbanowicz Es un ilustrador polaco cuya facinación por el anime japonés lo llevó a radicarse en la nación nipona donde ejerce en alguna productora de cine del genero. Mateusz tiene su vida paralela al trabajo formal que le ocupa y esa es la comparte a través de sus redes, escencialmente en YouTube y Patreon, este libro es el resultado de uno de esos proyectos. Al llegar a Tokyo se sintió atraido por el aspecto de estas pequeñas tiendas tradicionales que pasan desapercibidas para el ojo del lugareño y son toda una extravagancia para un extranjero que comienza a caminar las calles pequeñas de la megápolis.

A Urbanowicz lo descubrí en el maravilloso mundo de Pinterest, las imágenes de sus ilustraciones de fachadas de tiendas tradicionales en Tokyo se dispersaron ampliamente en la red social, tiene su blog, pero me parece que su cuenta de YouTube es la que tiene más fuerza, constantemente montando videos de su trabajo y los procesos detallados que sigue para conseguirlo, es una persona muy agradable y la verdad se puede disfrutar y aprender con sus videos.

El libro en si es una pieza maravillosa, se nota todo el cuidado que se ha puesto en los detalles, no es tapa dura, pero eso lo compensa con una bellísima portada con una cubierta plegable impresa por ambas caras, en cuyo interior lleva el mapa de la ciudad de Tokyo con las ubicaciones de todas las tiendas ilustradas en el libro. El calibre y la textura del material de sus páginas son perfectos y sobre todo la calidad de impresión, inigualable, pocos libros he visto con este nivel de impresión, los colores y la resolución son impresionantes. Todo esto hablando de la producción del libro, si nos adentramos a hablar del trabajo artístico en si mismo es aún más impresionante, la producción solo hace honor a la calidad del trabajo de Mateusz. Cada una de las fachadas tiene un perfecto equilibrio, se trata de un máximo pero sintético nivel de detalle que provoca ver las ilustraciones una y otra vez durante mucho tiempo, escudriñarlas y adentrarse en ellas, es como comer un postre sin fin.

Lamentablemente el libro solo está a la venta en Japón, tuve que comprarlo, hacerlo pasar por Estados Unidos y luego hacerlo llegar hasta Venezuela en sur América, aunque fue un largo viaje, la espera fue muy corta, en una semana ya tuve esta maravillosa pieza en mis manos! En el proceso me comuniqué un par de veces con Urbanowicz quien tuvo la amabilidad de responder a mis correos personalmente aun cuando la compra del libro se hace a través de Amazon Japón.

Ahora a tratar de adquirir una copia firmada de alguna de las ilustraciones del libro!
